We Love Kids

We love their cute little faces, their innocence, honesty, curiosity and their playfulness.

Bird & Bean is my love of kids and my love of design morphed into one cute little package.

We create the softest, sweetest clothes that appeal to both kids and their grown-ups. We are the favorite dress or shirt that your child won’t take off. And, we want to be sure that our clothes are durable enough so that you can pass them down to the next lucky kid!

Our Soft, Scrumptious Fabric & Other Product Information

Our clothing is made with the most buttery soft bamboo viscose/spandex and modal viscose/spandex blends.

It is extremely soft and stretchy, making it baby + kiddo’s top favorite, is absorbent and breathable, and doesn’t shrink or pill. We love our fabric and think that the weight and softness can’t be beat!

We make these clothes for kids after all, and we want them to last through all of the shenanigans and then get passed on to the next lucky kiddo!

We use low-impact, water-based inks for printing and we comply with all guidelines to ensure that all of our products are lead-free and safe.

Additionally, we do not treat any of our products with flame retardant chemicals. As such, all of our sleepwear complies with the “snug fitting” guidelines for items that are not treated with flame retardant. Please reach out if you need more information about federal sleepwear regulations!

We Try To Be Responsible and Play Fair

We have a very personal relationship with our manufacturer. We chose to work with them because of their integrity and meticulous attention to detail. And, most importantly, they maintain a social accountability standard that ensures workplace safety, fair working hours and decent wages, no discrimination and no child labor.

Long before starting children’s clothing label, Bird & Bean, (formally called Nohi Kids) designer Janel Andersen had dreams of one day opening a brick and mortar shop. She envisioned a well-curated space for littles and their favorite grown-ups that was also a space to connect with the local community.

In 2016, after more than a decade as the founder & designer of her children’s apparel brand and following the births of her two kids, she decided to explore the other side of retail and Bird & Bean, the store, was born. Located on the Oakland/Berkeley border in the heart of the Rockridge and Elmwood shopping districts, you will find lots of her own label, Bird & Bean, as well as many other unique collections and essentials for new parents and gift-givers!

Inspired by her own bird (daughter) and bean (son), Janel’s hope is to provide you with impeccable customer service and share her years of baby/kid product expertise to help you find exactly what you are looking for!

In the Fall of 2019, sister store, Stitch + Sparrow, opened directly next door.

We offer a collection of inspiring designers, locally made jewelry, handbags and accessories. Owner and buyer, Janel Andersen, handpicks every piece to create a laid back, yet sophisticated selection that we hope resonates with all of you! Some brands that you will find sprinkled throughout the shop are The Odells, Emerson Fry, MABE, Mirth, Laude the Label, Tallulah and Hope, Corey Lynn Calter, Native Nectar Botanicals, Homebody, Slow North, Juniper Ridge, and so many more!

Why Stitch? This journey started at my kitchen table in Oakland, CA in 2005. This is where the first tiny stitch on a baby t-shirt was sewn and my little clothing company came to life.

Why Sparrow? The sparrow can symbolize joy, simplicity, community, resourcefulness, and loyalty to family. This little bird is also fastidious and productive, always bustling for her food, foraging for her nests, and gathering for her young.
